Please see the following regarding comments I received recently:
the added money is all coming from MOTSA members and promoters fees, so why put that up for non-qualified riders that have not supported the
association or the promoters all year?
Some of the figures on the website are preliminary at this point. I presently have at least at $300 deficit in revenues and expenses (projected
revenue $4395, projected expenses $4700) and the awards figures are starting to come in higher than expected (partly because I didn't count
shipping and taxes) ....So by the time it's all said & done I'll probably be paying the Saturday shootout money out of my pocket to make up for the
difference in expenses. Bottom line is I will be funding the Saturday shootout money..... I still have some promoter money ($300) + $15 fees out
there that I haven't been able to collect...do I deduct this from the Shootout money if I don't get it? Who will make up the difference if I don't
collect it? (I will be good for it....I'm still on the hook for it)....If there is any excess shootout money, it will still be there for next year!
The website said from the beginning that you needed to have 4 shows to be qualified for the added money at the finals, so a lot of folks hauled
around and spent lots of dollars to get qualified, probably went to some shows they would not have attended otherwise,
You could have gotten qualified at 4 Lebanon shows for $63 total (1 ride per show @$12 x 4= $48 + $15 participation fee= $63) ...Edina for even
less....my shows at Bay and NEC would have cost either $55 (if you rode with a Beginner) or $63 (Novice) or $92 total in the #8, 6 & 4's and I offered
$1000 in shootout money (total) in the last 3 shows.....not "lots of dollars" by any means. The perception of "lots of dollars" makes this all about
money...it's about having a fair chance, and having a good time, and being with other horse people, and being recognized for your achievements.
I think it would be better to keep the 4 and 6 and shootout class for MOTSA qualified riders (continued next paragraph)
Last year we did not have a 4 & 6 class....it is added this year to give the greater number of riders a chance to find a place to ride...and still have a
chance for shootout money. I have to do something to help subsidize arena rent, stalls, insurance and other expenses associated with a show like
this. Associations like MOTPA get free arena rent + $800 added from the State Fair + cheap stall fees. I don't get guarantees or subsidies. Who will
help fill my stall quota if I don't get enough riders? Do I raise stall fees to make a killing? I keep them as low as possible....I don't rip you off for stall
fees! But people rip me off by bringing 2 or 3 horses and only telling me they have 1 or 2....And I have to pay for the dirty stalls. Who will make up
the difference if I come out short? Again, many that rode (non-qualified) last year are now with us this year.
First, this eliminates the problem of new riders coming to the finals and not being rated correctly
They will be rated correctly....and last years show that we opened up to non-qualified riders (Saturday only) is one of the main reasons MOTSA grew
this year....many of these riders are now participants. Financially, I can not afford to have just a one day shootout show...I have to commit to at
least 2 days to get the arena, and cannot afford to just have a one day shootout for qualified riders.....and keep the entry fees as low as they are.
Maybe I could raise the entry fees? In past years, entry fees were essentially higher with no added/shootout money ...Or charge per-ride fees
throughout the year or secretarial fees (like MOTPA) to fund all of this! RSNC charges $3/ride sanctioning (that's per/ride) plus higher entry fees.
There has got to be a balance somewhere. I just can't be raising entries or charging extra fees in this economy.
Opening this up gives everyone less of a reason to go get qualified this year or in the future.
How, so? You can still only choose to ride only on Sunday. I don't know of any other show (in MO) that guaranteed $1000 added plus awards
after just four shows...+ the 60% payback. Opening up last year's Saturday show has increased participation and was probably the main reason
we have more riders this year. Increased participation means increased paybacks. Remember you could get qualified this year for as low as
$55...that's cheaper than the mandatory stall fee I paid at the first RSNC Sorting I ever went to!
The bonus seconds are a good thought but I think that like the handicapping system that RSNC uses it has the potential to get confusing
This is not "handicapping"...These are bonus seconds ...That were advertised early in the year to reward people that rode in shows over the 4
minimum.....this bonus can be used only one time...and must be on your entry card prior to the ride....just as your name and rating must be on the
entry card prior to the ride....simple!
MOTSA is fortunate to have people like Jared and Cassie are very generous in their involvement with the youth awards. This is what will help us get
better....but just think of the time that they spent on the youth and multiply that by 100...That is how much time Linda & I spend on the phone with
questions, ratings, promotion, updating results, planning, website updates, arranging for arenas (NEC & Boone Co), arranging for help, cattle,
hauling, hay, water tubs, clock, PA, setup and whatever....and we don't charge secretarial or per/ride fees, we just hope you'll ride at one of our
shows. If I treat people fair, they will ride!
This is the best group of horse-people I've ever been associated with...even you-know-who....I love him like a brother....but people need to see the
whole picture and I have seen too many deals fail cause of bickering (especially over money) and jealousy....from penning assoc's and cutters to
ranch horse and foundation horse clubs...remember, I'm old and I've seen a lot of this stuff, good and bad...but I won't let this get to the point where
it's all about the money, because then it surely will fail! Above all, it's about having a fair chance, being affordable, having a good time,
being with other horse people and family, and being recognized for your achievements.
I've enjoyed everyone and everyone's input this year......and don't hesitate to ask questions or offer suggestions...I still don't know everything....
Paul & Linda
PS....I'm still looking for the following:
Cattle that don't cost $1.25/# when you buy them....but are worth $0.90 when you sell
Cattle that don't eat, or get sick, or die
Free secretarial help (that doesn't complain & can put up with an old grouch)
Free awards, free fuel, free help, free hay & feed, free insurance, free arena rent, free show stalls, free added money.........
And I will still listen to "free advice" ......It's what you learn after you "know everything" that's really important..............
Flag's Up!....Let's have fun Sorting
JUST THINK OF SATURDAY AS A "REGULAR" MOTSA SHOW....ANYONE CAN RIDE - MUST BE RATED TO RIDE IN THE #6 & #4 CLASSES...............
SUNDAY IS FOR THOSE RIDERS THAT HAVE 4 QUALIFYING SHOWS AS OF 9-18.....REMEMBER THERE WERE 18 QUALIFYING SHOWS THIS YEAR!
